Which Medical Schools Are in Arizona?

All 3 Arizona MD schools, 2 DO schools and the Mayo and Creighton campuses, with class sizes, MCAT® averages, in-state shares, tuition and deadlines.

Arizona has 3 MD schools of its own and 2 osteopathic (DO) schools, and 2 out-of-state MD schools also train students at Phoenix-area campuses. The MD schools are the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson, the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Phoenix and Arizona State University's new John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering. The DO schools are Midwestern University's Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine (AZCOM) in Glendale and A.T. Still University's School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona (ATSU-SOMA) in Mesa.

The two campuses that belong to out-of-state schools are the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine's Phoenix/Scottsdale campus and Creighton University School of Medicine's Phoenix campus. The LCME's directory of accredited programs lists Mayo under Rochester, Minnesota, and Creighton under Omaha, Nebraska, so you apply through the main school.

The DO figures come from AACOM's 2024-25 school profiles for AZCOM and ATSU-SOMA. The two UArizona rows are as tallied by Shemmassian Consulting, which doesn't give a data year for them. Mayo's 50 seats come from its 2026 class profile, and its 521 is the median for all of its campuses combined, not Arizona alone. ASU seated 36 students in its first class, per ASU News, and hasn't published an average yet. Its admissions FAQ sets a hard minimum of 504.

Creighton isn't in the table because its Phoenix class size isn't published separately. Its first class to complete all 4 years in Phoenix graduated 97 students in May 2025, according to The Catholic Sun, and the school trains with Dignity Health St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center.

The 18.4-point spread between Mayo's 521 and ATSU-SOMA's 502.6 means Arizona has a school for very different applicants. The MSAR guide covers where to find each school's current median and 10th-to-90th percentile range.

Residency Matters at UArizona and Almost Nowhere Else

The two public UArizona schools fill most of their seats with Arizonans. The private schools don't.

UArizona shares as tallied by Shemmassian Consulting, which gives no data year. AZCOM (101 of 265) and ATSU-SOMA (17 of 154) are calculated from AACOM's 2024-25 profiles. Mayo and ASU don't publish a share. All bars use one scale, with 100 percent at full width.

UArizona Tucson's own admissions FAQ says out-of-state applicants get "comparable consideration after the interview process," and that the biggest difference comes at initial screening.

At the other end, ATSU-SOMA drew 137 of its 154 first-years from outside Arizona. ASU's FAQ says a connection to Arizona, Phoenix or ASU "is not a requirement for admission," and Mayo lets you rank its Arizona track alongside its Minnesota and Florida tracks. If you live in a neighboring state, the Utah guide covers the options next door.

What Each School Charges in 2026-27

These are first-year figures from each school's or AACOM's own pages:

SchoolArizona residentsNonresidents
UArizona Phoenix$43,046$63,746
ASU (Shufeldt)$48,164$80,979
Mayo Clinic$70,280$70,280
A.T. Still (ATSU-SOMA)$71,750$71,750
Midwestern (AZCOM)$80,656$80,656

UArizona Phoenix's figure is tuition plus $146 in mandatory fees, from its cost of attendance page. ASU's is its estimated tuition and program fee, from its tuition page, which says the estimates are subject to change. Mayo's comes from its tuition and aid page. The DO figures come from AACOM, and AZCOM's profile still marks its 2026-27 number "TBA," so treat it as provisional. UArizona Tucson hasn't been added because its current rate wasn't on a page we could check. Shemmassian lists $40,868 for residents and $61,898 for nonresidents, without a year.

ASU's resident discount is $32,815 a year, the largest in the state. UArizona Phoenix's is $20,700. An Arizona resident at UArizona Phoenix pays $37,610 less a year than at AZCOM, or $150,440 less over 4 years, before living costs.

Mayo's sticker price is less scary than it looks: its tuition page says 96 percent of the class of 2025 received scholarships. The med school scholarship guide covers where other aid comes from.

UArizona's Free-Tuition Deal for Primary Care

The Arizona Legislature helped fund a Primary Care Physician Scholarship at both UArizona medical schools. When it was announced in November 2019, the university said it would cover tuition for about 100 students once fully running. The terms, from the Tucson PCP scholarship FAQ:

  • What it pays: Tuition, for up to the standard 4 years, as long as you keep making satisfactory progress and stay on a primary care path.
  • What you owe: At least 2 years of full-time practice, plus 1 year for each school year of support, up to 4 years. Residency and fellowship years don't count.
  • Where: In a state-designated shortage area (an HPSA or MUA-P) in Arizona. You can do residency out of state, but you have to come back.
  • Which specialties: Family medicine, general internal medicine, geriatrics, general pediatrics, general surgery, psychiatry and OB-GYN.

Tucson also runs a 3-year Primary Care Accelerated Medical Pathway, which its admissions page says gets you an MD and a family and community medicine residency in 6 years.

Mayo and ASU Are Two Different Bets

Mayo has the highest median MCAT® of any program in the state. Its 2026 class profile reports 6,061 applications and 215 acceptances, a 3.5 percent rate, with a median GPA of 3.97. Its how-to-apply page sets a minimum MCAT® of 510 and charges a $120 secondary fee, waived for AAMC fee assistance recipients. For students starting in 2027, AMCAS closed October 1, 2026, and the secondary was due October 15, so Mayo is out of reach until next cycle.

ASU is the newest. The LCME granted it preliminary accreditation in October 2025, per ASU, and its first 36 students got their white coats on August 7, 2026. You finish in 4 years with both an MD and a Master of Science in medical engineering, and the main clinical partner is HonorHealth. Classes meet in the Mercado building in downtown Phoenix until a new headquarters opens, planned for 2028. Preliminary accreditation is the first of three LCME stages, so you'd be joining a school that won't have graduates until 2030.

If you're weighing a DO program against these MD options, the MD vs DO guide compares admissions and match outcomes.

Deadlines for the 2026-27 Cycle

  • UArizona Phoenix: AMCAS is due November 16, 2026, and the $95 secondary and letters are due December 1, 2026, per its application process page. The last MCAT® it accepts is September 12, 2026.
  • UArizona Tucson: Secondaries go out on a rolling basis from July through December, with a $95 fee. The oldest MCAT® accepted is from January 2024, and the latest is September 12, 2026.
  • ASU: AMCAS is due November 15, 2026, and the secondary is due December 15, 2026, per its dates and deadlines page. The MCAT® cutoff is September 12, 2026.
  • Midwestern (AZCOM): AACOMAS is due March 1, 2027, and there's no supplemental application.
  • A.T. Still (ATSU-SOMA): AACOMAS is due March 1, 2027, and the $70 supplemental is due March 15, 2027. Applicants need at least a 2.80 cumulative and science GPA to get a secondary.

The UArizona schools and ASU don't accept MCAT® scores from after September 12, 2026, so if you're aiming at next cycle instead, the 2027 MCAT test dates guide shows which dates leave room before those cutoffs. To see how your score compares with the averages above, look it up in the PurpleCAT MCAT score guide.

Last verified November 4, 2026, against the LCME's accredited program directory (updated November 2, 2026), AACOM's profiles for AZCOM and ATSU-SOMA, the UArizona, ASU and Mayo admissions and cost pages, and Shemmassian Consulting's Arizona tally. Deadlines, tuition and class profiles change every cycle, so check each school's site and the MSAR before you finalize a list.
