Which Medical Schools Are in Utah?
All 4 Utah medical schools, including BYU's new MD program and its Dec. 31 deadline, with class sizes, average MCAT®s and how many Utahns leave the state.
Utah has 2 MD schools and 2 osteopathic (DO) schools, but only one of the MD schools has students today. The University of Utah's Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine is the state's only enrolling MD program, and Brigham Young University's new School of Medicine takes its first class in July 2027, with primary applications due December 31, 2026.
The MD list comes from the LCME's directory of accredited programs, which shows the University of Utah with full accreditation and BYU with preliminary accreditation. The DO list comes from the American Osteopathic Association's list of osteopathic medical schools, which shows Noorda College of Osteopathic Medicine in Provo and the Rocky Vista University (RVU) campus in Ivins, near St. George.

The University of Utah's class size is from The Salt Lake Tribune in August 2026, and BYU's is the cap it's approved for. The DO class sizes and all average MCAT®s are as tallied by Shemmassian Consulting.
| School | Degree and city | First-year class | Average MCAT® |
|---|---|---|---|
| University of Utah (Spencer Fox Eccles) | MD, Salt Lake City | 132 | 511 |
| Brigham Young University | MD, Provo | up to 60 | none yet |
| Noorda College of Osteopathic Medicine | DO, Provo | 190 | 503 |
| Rocky Vista University, Southern Utah | DO, Ivins | 157 | 503.5 |

2Utah Sends Most of Its MD Students Elsewhere
The AAMC's Table A-4 counts 242 Utah residents who started at an MD school in 2023-24. Utah had 125 first-year MD seats that year, all at the University of Utah, per Table A-1. The same table shows 72.8 percent of that class were Utah residents, or about 91 students.
So about 151 of those 242 Utahns, or 62 percent, started MD school in another state. Michigan runs the other way, with more MD seats than residents who start MD school, as the Michigan medical schools breakdown shows.
Getting in is still hard. Table A-3 counts 593 Utah applicants to MD schools in 2023-24, so about 41 percent of them started at an MD school that year. Some of the rest started at DO schools, which these tables don't count.
The University of Utah favors residents. It drew 3,035 applications for that class, and 17.1 percent came from Utah residents, or about 519. That's about 88 percent of the state's 593 applicants. About 91 of those 519 in-state applicants enrolled, roughly 1 in 6, while about 34 of the 2,516 out-of-state applicants enrolled, roughly 1 in 74. These count students who enrolled, not acceptances, and the in-state and out-of-state splits are estimates built from Table A-1's percentages.

- A new building. The eight-floor, 211,000-square-foot school opened in August 2026 after four years of construction and $215 million, per the Tribune. This fall's class is the first to use it for all of its MD training.
- Where the 132 seats go. The admissions team picks 112 students, 10 come from Idaho under a contract with that state, and 10 are new this year: they start in Salt Lake City and move to St. George after 14 months. The university's magazine says the Utah Legislature funds the St. George campus with $5.5 million a year to train doctors for rural communities.
- A three-year option. The school offers an accelerated three-year path, which dean Kristina Callis Duffin estimates could save a student about $250,000.
4BYU's First Class Starts in July 2027
BYU announced its preliminary accreditation on October 14, 2026, which lets it recruit and admit students. The Tribune reports it's approved to accept up to 60. The details below are from BYU's How to Apply page and admissions FAQ.
- Deadlines. You apply through AMCAS. The primary application is due December 31, 2026, and the secondary is due January 15, 2027. The secondary costs $50, and it's waived automatically if AAMC Fee Assistance waives your AMCAS fees.
- Faith requirements. You don't need to be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but you must commit to the BYU Honor Code and get an Ecclesiastical Endorsement. Both are required for a complete application.
- MCAT. There's no minimum score, and BYU gives the most weight to your highest score. For the fall 2027 class, scores must be from January 2024 or later.
- Prerequisites. Two semesters each of biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry and algebra-based physics. Biochemistry can replace one semester of organic chemistry, and labs aren't required.
- Interviews. They're in person at BYU from January to March 2027, with a 45-minute traditional interview plus multiple mini interviews (MMIs).
Classes will start in a renovated part of the former Provo High School while BYU builds a 275,000-square-foot medical school on its West Campus, with construction expected to begin in 2027. The FAQ lists no tuition amount yet, and with no class enrolled, there's no average MCAT® to compare against.
5The 2 DO Schools
Noorda, in Provo, enrolled its first class in fall 2021. At its July 2023 white coat ceremony, more than 190 students got coats, and 67 of them had ties to Utah, per the Daily Herald. Rocky Vista opened its Ivins campus in 2017 as a branch of its main campus in Englewood, Colorado.
Both DO schools report average MCAT®s about 8 points below the University of Utah's. If you're weighing both degrees, the MD vs DO guide covers how they compare in admissions and the residency match.
