Which Medical Schools Are in Pennsylvania?

All 7 MD schools and 4 DO campuses in Pennsylvania, plus IUP's new DO school, with class sizes, average MCAT®s, in-state shares, deadlines and tuition.

Pennsylvania has 7 MD schools and 3 osteopathic (DO) schools, and one of those DO schools runs 2 campuses, so you can apply to 11 programs in the state. The MD schools are the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Penn State College of Medicine, Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, Temple's Lewis Katz School of Medicine, Drexel University College of Medicine and Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. The DO programs are the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM), the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Erie and at Seton Hill in Greensburg, and Duquesne University's Nasuti College of Osteopathic Medicine in Pittsburgh.

A fourth DO school is on the way. Indiana University of Pennsylvania's new College of Osteopathic Medicine plans to seat its first class in fall 2027.

The MD list comes from the LCME's directory of accredited programs, which shows all 7 schools with full accreditation. The DO list comes from the American Osteopathic Association's school list and AACOM's directory of osteopathic colleges, dated September 3, 2026, which also lists IUP.

The MD class sizes and averages are as tallied by Shemmassian Consulting. It labels Temple's and Penn State's averages as 2023 figures, labels Pitt's 515 as a median, and gives no data year for the rest. The DO numbers come from AACOM's school profiles for 2024-25: PCOM's profile lists 365 first-years in Philadelphia, LECOM's profile lists 328 at Erie with Seton Hill's count still "TBA," and Duquesne's profile lists a mean MCAT® of 505.7 and a mean GPA of 3.63. Duquesne's enrollment figures on that page don't add up, so the table leaves its class size out.

Penn's 522 is 19.7 points above LECOM Erie's 502.3, so the 10 programs with data draw very different applicant pools. For current medians, check the AAMC's MSAR, and the MSAR guide covers whether it's worth paying for.

Being a Resident Helps Less Than You'd Think

In North Carolina, the state guide shows Brody and UNC filling most of their seats with residents. Pennsylvania works differently: only one school fills a majority of its class from inside the state.

Share of each first-year class from Pennsylvania
Geisinger Commonwealth, MD65.2%Temple, MD38.3%Pitt, MD37.8%PCOM, DO35.6%Drexel, MD32.6%Penn State, MD31%Jefferson, MD28.7%LECOM Erie, DO18%Penn, MD11.5%
MD schools as tallied by Shemmassian Consulting, which gives no data year for most of them. PCOM (130 of 365) and LECOM Erie (59 of 328) are calculated from AACOM's 2024-25 profiles. All bars use one scale, with 100 percent at full width.

Geisinger Commonwealth is the outlier at 65.2 percent. Every other school with data draws less than 40 percent of its class from Pennsylvania, and Penn's 11.5 percent is the lowest. If you're from out of state, that's good news: most Pennsylvania seats are open to you on close to equal terms.

The resident tuition discount is also small at most schools. These are annual tuition and fees, as tallied by Shemmassian:

SchoolPennsylvania residentsNonresidents
Temple$57,426$60,890
Penn State$60,106$65,878
Jefferson$62,514$62,514
Geisinger Commonwealth$64,158$70,976
Pitt$65,872$69,704
Drexel$71,982$71,982
Penn$74,687$74,687

Geisinger's $6,818 gap is the largest among the MD schools, and Temple's resident rate is the lowest in the state for an MD. Compare that with North Carolina, where a resident saves $31,440 a year at Brody. The New Jersey guide covers the closest neighbor if you're comparing options in the region.

Three Ways to Pay Less

Pennsylvania's sticker prices are high, but three options cost less than the schools in the table above.

  • LECOM's tuition: AACOM's profile lists 2026-27 tuition of $41,825 at both Erie and Seton Hill, the same for residents and nonresidents. PCOM's AACOM profile lists $66,015 for the same year, so LECOM costs $24,190 less a year, or $96,760 less over 4 years, before fees and living costs.
  • Geisinger's scholars program: The Abigail Geisinger Scholars Program pays tuition and required fees for up to 4 years plus a $2,000 monthly stipend. In return, you work as a Geisinger-employed physician after residency, with 2 years of service forgiving 2 years of support. The FAQ names family medicine, general internal medicine, medicine-pediatrics and pediatrics, and also refers to psychiatry.
  • IUP's resident rate: IUP's trustees set 2027-28 tuition at $43,200 for Pennsylvania residents and $65,000 for nonresidents, plus $1,570 in annual fees. That $21,800 gap is the largest resident discount in the state, though the first class won't start until 2027.

For the scholarships outside these programs, the med school scholarship guide covers where the money comes from and how to apply for it.

The Two Newest DO Schools

Duquesne founded its osteopathic college in Pittsburgh in 2024, per AACOM's profile, which lists a minimum 3.2 GPA and a minimum 500 MCAT®. In October 2025, the university renamed it the Nasuti College of Osteopathic Medicine after a gift it called "the second largest gift commitment in Duquesne's nearly 150-year history," with an emphasis on training primary care physicians.

IUP's college, in Indiana, Pennsylvania, received pre-accreditation from the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation in May 2026, according to IUP. Its approved class size is 120, but it can admit no more than 50 percent of that in its first year, so the first class can have up to 60 students. The school's stated focus is rural health care. If you're weighing a DO degree against an MD, the MD vs DO guide covers how they compare in admissions and the residency match.

Deadlines and Fees for the 2026-27 Cycle

  • Jefferson: The MD program deadline is November 15, 2026, and all supporting documents are due January 1, 2027, per its application timeline. The Early Decision deadline was August 1, 2026.
  • Penn State: Its deadlines page lists a November 15 AMCAS deadline and a December 15 deadline for the secondary, MCAT® and letters, without a year. The secondary fee is $90. Penn State also runs a regional campus at University Park that takes 12 new students each year.
  • Pitt: Its Early Decision page requires the MCAT® before July 1, the supplemental application by August 31 and an interview before September 15, with decisions by October 1. The page doesn't list years for these dates.
  • PCOM: The AACOMAS deadline is February 1, 2027, and the $75 institutional fee and letters are due March 1, 2027. There's no supplemental application.
  • LECOM: The AACOMAS deadline is April 1, 2027. The $50 supplemental fee is due by May 10, 2027, and it's waived if you have an AACOMAS fee waiver.
  • Duquesne: The AACOMAS deadline is April 1, 2027, and the $65 supplemental application is due April 30, 2027.

The DO deadlines run from February to April 2027, months after the MD deadlines. If you're applying next cycle instead, pick an MCAT® date that leaves time for scores to reach schools before these deadlines.
