Which Medical Schools Are in Tennessee?
All 5 Tennessee MD schools and 2 DO schools, with class sizes, MCAT® averages, in-state shares, 2026-27 tuition, accreditation flags and deadlines.
Tennessee has 5 MD schools and 2 osteopathic (DO) schools. The MD schools are Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Meharry Medical College and Belmont University's Thomas F. Frist, Jr. College of Medicine, all in Nashville, plus the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Medicine in Memphis and East Tennessee State University's Quillen College of Medicine in Johnson City. The DO schools are Lincoln Memorial University's DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM), with campuses in Harrogate and Knoxville, and Baptist Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine (BUCOM) in Memphis.
The LCME's directory of accredited programs, updated November 2, 2026, lists all 5 MD schools. Two of them carry a flag you should read before you apply, covered further down.
1Class Sizes and Average MCAT®s
| School | Degree and city | First-year class | Average MCAT® |
|---|---|---|---|
| LMU-DCOM | DO, Harrogate and Knoxville | 566 | 497.0 |
| UTHSC | MD, Memphis | 181 | 511 |
| Meharry | MD, Nashville | 115 | 503 |
| BUCOM | DO, Memphis | 114 | 498.4 |
| Vanderbilt | MD, Nashville | 96 | 521 |
| Quillen (ETSU) | MD, Johnson City | 78 | 509 |
| Belmont (Frist) | MD, Nashville | 54 | 510 |
UTHSC's row comes from its 2026 admissions profile, which reports 2,798 applications, 406 interviews and 271 offers. Quillen's is its 2025 entering class from its class statistics page. As of April 27, 2026, Quillen had accepted 96 students for its 2026 class, with a 512 average MCAT®, so the class is growing. Belmont's 54 seats and 510 come from its Class of 2029 profile, and the 510 is a median, with a range of 504 to 520.
Vanderbilt's 96 is the number of positions on its admission process page, which gives an MCAT® range of the 74th to 100th percentile but no average. Its 521 is from 2023, as tallied by Shemmassian Consulting. Meharry's class of 115 is from its admissions FAQ, and its 503 average is as tallied by Shemmassian's Meharry guide.
The DO rows are from AACOM's profiles for LMU-DCOM (2024-25) and BUCOM (2025-26). AACOM lists all 566 LMU-DCOM first-years under Harrogate and marks Knoxville "TBA," so treat 566 as the combined class.
That's a 24-point spread from Vanderbilt to LMU-DCOM. The MSAR guide covers where to find each MD school's current median and 10th-to-90th percentile range.
2Tennessee Residency Counts at the Public Schools
UTHSC and Quillen are state schools, and they fill most of their seats with Tennesseans. The private schools that publish a share draw mostly from out of state.
The applicant pools explain it. UTHSC got 2,194 out-of-state applications and enrolled 26 of those students. Quillen's FAQ gives preference to permanent Tennessee residents, and also encourages applicants from border counties and those committed to serving the region.
The private MD schools tilt the other way. Shemmassian puts Tennesseans at 11.3 percent of Meharry's class and 10.5 percent of Vanderbilt's. If you live next door, the Georgia guide covers the options to the south.

These are first-year tuition and required fees from each school's or AACOM's own pages, before health insurance and living costs:
| School | Tennessee residents | Nonresidents |
|---|---|---|
| Quillen (ETSU) | $38,900 | $49,844 |
| UTHSC | $43,334 | $63,794 |
| BUCOM | $56,371 | $56,371 |
| LMU-DCOM | $60,206 | $60,206 |
| Meharry | $69,032 | $69,032 |
| Belmont (Frist) | $72,070 | $72,070 |
| Vanderbilt | $74,975 | $74,975 |
Quillen's figures come from its 2026-27 student budget. UTHSC's are $37,560 in tuition plus $5,774 in fees, and nonresidents add a $20,460 surcharge, per its cost of attendance estimate, which notes that rates are officially set each July. Meharry's is $59,170 in tuition plus $9,862 in fees, from its cost of attendance sheet. Belmont's comes from its tuition page, and Vanderbilt's, which includes a one-time $100 transcript fee, from its cost page. The DO figures are AACOM's tuition plus resident fees.
A Tennessee resident at Quillen pays $21,306 less a year than at LMU-DCOM, or $85,224 less over 4 years. Quillen is also $36,075 a year cheaper than Vanderbilt's sticker price, but Vanderbilt's cost page says 68 percent of its class of 2028 received a need-based or merit scholarship, and 49 percent of recent graduates had no medical school debt. The med school scholarship guide covers where other aid comes from.
4Two Schools Carry Accreditation Flags
The LCME directory lists Meharry as "Full, on probation." Meharry's LCME page says the program "remains on probation with full accreditation," that the LCME reaffirmed probation after an April 2024 survey visit, and that probation doesn't affect students' degrees. Meharry was founded in 1876 and is one of four historically Black medical schools in the country, per Shemmassian.
Belmont is listed as "Preliminary, on probation." Preliminary is the earliest LCME status, granted to Belmont in 2023, and the school seated its first 50 students in July 2024, per Belmont. That class won't graduate until 2028, so there's no match record yet.
On the DO side, AACOM lists BUCOM, which opened in 2024, with pre-accreditation status. LMU-DCOM has held "Accreditation with Exceptional Outcome" since December 9, 2022, for 10 years, and AACOM lists a third campus in Orange Park, Florida, opening in fall 2026. If you're weighing these DO programs against the MD options, the MD vs DO guide compares admissions and match outcomes.
5Deadlines for the 2026-27 Cycle
- UTHSC: AMCAS was due October 15, 2026, and the secondary fee is $100, per its application process page. It accepts MCAT® scores through September 2026 and has no early decision.
- Quillen (ETSU): AMCAS was due November 1, 2026. Secondary applicants must take Casper, and scores from tests after December 3, 2026 aren't accepted. MCAT® scores can't be more than 3 years old, and the FAQ says scores below 497 won't be considered competitive.
- Vanderbilt: AMCAS closed November 1, and the $95 secondary is due November 15, waived for AAMC fee assistance recipients. The latest MCAT® it considers is September 2026.
- Meharry: AMCAS is open until December 15, and the $65 secondary is due January 15, per its FAQ, so its primary is still open as of this update.
- Belmont (Frist): You need at least a 500 MCAT® to get a secondary, and for 2027 matriculation the oldest exam accepted is from January 1, 2024, per its requirements page.
- LMU-DCOM: AACOMAS is due April 30, 2027, and the $50 supplemental is due May 15, 2027. The latest MCAT® accepted is February 28, 2027.
- BUCOM: AACOMAS is due April 30, 2027, but the $50 supplemental is due March 1, 2027. The latest MCAT® accepted is January 31, 2027.
Quillen's Casper requirement is easy to miss, and the Casper guide explains the format. To see how your score compares with the averages above, look it up in the PurpleCAT MCAT score guide.
