Which Medical Schools Are in Georgia?
All 7 Georgia medical schools with in-state shares, average MCAT®s and AAMC data on who fills the seats, plus what UGA's new school adds for Georgians.
Georgia has 5 MD schools and 2 osteopathic (DO) campuses, 7 in all. In 2023-24, more Georgians started MD school than Georgia's MD schools had first-year seats, so about 245 residents left the state to train, and the University of Georgia's new school, which opened in July 2026, covers about a quarter of that gap.
The MD count comes from the LCME's directory of accredited programs, which lists five Georgia programs: four with full accreditation and UGA with preliminary accreditation. The DO count comes from the American Osteopathic Association's list of osteopathic medical schools, which shows two Georgia campuses, both run by the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM).
1The 5 MD Schools
The in-state column is the share of each school's 2023-24 entering class who were Georgia residents, from the AAMC's Table A-1. The MCAT® column is the school-reported average, as tallied by MedEdits. UGA's row uses its own figures for its first class.
| School | City | In-state matriculants | Average MCAT® |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emory (private) | Atlanta | 40% | 515 |
| UGA School of Medicine (public) | Athens | 95% | 514 |
| Medical College of Georgia (public) | Augusta | 99.6% | 511 |
| Mercer (private) | Macon | 100% | 505 |
| Morehouse (private) | Atlanta | 68% | 504 |
Emory's 139 seats drew 12,882 applications, about 93 per seat, and 60 percent of the class came from outside Georgia. Morehouse drew 6,992 applications for 110 seats, about 64 per seat.
MCG and Mercer are built for Georgians. The Medical College of Georgia enrolled 264 students in 2023-24, and Table A-1 shows 263 of them were state residents. Mercer goes further: all 1,351 of its applications came from Georgia residents, and it filled 170 seats from that pool. It teaches on campuses in Macon, Savannah and Columbus.

2The 2 DO Schools
These are the Georgia campuses on the AOA's list:
- PCOM Georgia, Suwanee. About 27 miles north of downtown Atlanta, and training DO students since 2005. MedEdits lists an average MCAT® of 503.
- PCOM South Georgia, Moultrie. Established in 2019. Starting in 2025-26, PCOM added 35 seats to bring each class to 90 students, citing rural physician needs.
The MD vs DO guide covers how the two degrees compare in admissions and the residency match.

The four established MD schools enrolled 683 first-year students in 2023-24, per Table A-1. The AAMC's Table A-4 counts 808 Georgia residents who started at an MD school anywhere that year.
By those in-state shares, about 563 of the 683 seats went to Georgians. That means about 70 percent of Georgians who started MD school stayed in the state, about 245 left, and about 120 Georgia seats went to students from elsewhere, most of them at Emory. New York runs the opposite pattern and imports about 900 students a year, as the New York medical schools breakdown shows.
Getting in anywhere is still hard. Table A-3 counts 1,825 Georgia applicants to MD schools in 2023-24, so about 1,017 of them, or 56 percent, didn't start at an MD school that year. Some of them started at DO schools, which these tables don't count.
4What UGA Adds
The LCME granted UGA preliminary accreditation on February 13, 2026, two years after the Board of Regents approved it, in February 2024, as the state's second public medical school. The first class of 64 students started orientation in July 2026, and UGA reported these numbers for it:
- Applications: More than 2,000, in a two-week admissions cycle, with 235 applicants interviewed.
- Georgia residents: 95 percent of the class.
- Averages: A 514 MCAT® and a 3.85 GPA.
Before UGA had its own school, MCG ran an Athens campus with UGA that enrolled 60 students per class, according to the AJC's report. If MCG's enrollment holds steady, 64 seats at 95 percent adds about 61 Georgians a year, roughly a quarter of the 245 who left in 2023-24. UGA points to the shortage it's meant to fill: Georgia ranks 39th in the country in active patient care physicians per capita and 41st in public medical students per capita.
5Public Schools Charge Georgians Less
MedEdits lists the Medical College of Georgia's tuition at $31,013 a year for residents and $59,371 for nonresidents. The private schools charge one rate, from $42,586 at Mercer to $51,136 at Emory. Since Mercer enrolled only Georgians in 2023-24 and MCG enrolled about 1 nonresident, the cheaper seats are mostly closed to applicants from other states.
