Which Medical Schools Are in Texas?
All 16 Texas medical schools with in-state shares, average MCAT®s and the application service each uses, plus AAMC data on how many Texans stay home.
Texas has 16 medical schools: 13 grant the MD and 3 grant the DO. Thirteen of the 16 are public, and the other 3 (Baylor, TCU and the University of the Incarnate Word) are private.
The MD list comes from the LCME's directory of accredited programs, and the public or private split comes from UT Austin's Health Professions Office. The in-state column is the share of each MD school's 2023-24 entering class who were Texas residents, from the AAMC's Table A-1. The MCAT® column is the school's reported average, as tallied by MedEdits.
| School | City | In-state matriculants | Average MCAT® |
|---|---|---|---|
| UT Southwestern (MD, public) | Dallas | 87% | 517 |
| UT Health San Antonio Long (MD, public) | San Antonio | 88% | 519 |
| UT Austin Dell (MD, public) | Austin | 90% | 517 |
| UTHealth Houston McGovern (MD, public) | Houston | 95% | 514 |
| UTMB John Sealy (MD, public) | Galveston | 94% | 513 |
| Texas A&M (MD, public) | College Station | 86% | 513 |
| Texas Tech Paul L. Foster (MD, public) | El Paso | 94% | 513 |
| Texas Tech (MD, public) | Lubbock | 90% | 511 |
| UT Rio Grande Valley (MD, public) | Edinburg | 92% | 510 |
| UT Tyler (MD, public) | Tyler | 98% | 506 |
| University of Houston Fertitta (MD, public) | Houston | 97% | 506 |
| Baylor (MD, private) | Houston | 83% | 519 |
| TCU Burnett (MD, private) | Fort Worth | 25% | 512 |
| UNT Health TCOM (DO, public) | Fort Worth | n/a | 509 |
| Sam Houston State (DO, public) | Conroe | n/a | 506 |
| Incarnate Word (DO, private) | San Antonio | n/a | 504 |
Two of the MD schools are still new. The LCME lists the University of Houston on provisional accreditation and UT Tyler on preliminary accreditation, the stages a program passes through before full accreditation. All three DO schools are accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA), per AACOM's profiles of Sam Houston State and Incarnate Word and TCOM's accreditation page.
The AAMC table covers MD schools only. For the DO schools, AACOM's profile shows Incarnate Word enrolled 126 Texans in a first-year class of 161 in 2024-25, or 78 percent.
Treat the MCAT® column as a rough guide. Shemmassian Consulting's Texas list gives averages several points lower for some schools, such as 513 for Dell and 503 for UT Tyler. Check each school's current median in the MSAR, and the MSAR guide covers whether a subscription is worth buying.
1Most Texans Stay in Texas
The 13 Texas MD schools enrolled 1,927 first-year students in 2023-24, and by their in-state percentages about 1,697 were Texans. The AAMC's Table A-4 counts 1,994 Texas residents who started at an MD school anywhere that year. California makes a useful contrast, with 2,899 residents who started at an MD school that year.
That leaves about 297 Texans, or 15 percent, who started at an MD school in another state. In California, 58 percent did, as the California school breakdown explains.
A state law explains much of that. TMDSAS's residency page says Texas law limits non-residents to no more than 10 percent of entering medical school classes, and Shemmassian notes the cap binds the public schools, not private Baylor, TCU or Incarnate Word. The AAMC counts residency by its own definition rather than the TMDSAS test, so a few public schools show slightly more than 10 percent out-of-state in the table above.
The private schools are where out-of-state applicants have room. TCU's class was three-quarters non-Texan, and it drew 6,357 applications for 60 seats in 2023-24, the most of any Texas school in Table A-1.

Fourteen of the 16 schools take applications through TMDSAS, according to Texas State's pre-health office: the 11 public MD schools, Baylor, TCOM and Sam Houston State. The other 2 use the national services.
- TCU Burnett: AMCAS. Its admissions page says the school "is not on the TMDSAS application site at this time."
- Incarnate Word: AACOMAS, per its AACOM profile. Tuition for 2026-27 is $64,875 for residents and non-residents alike.
So a Texas resident applying to every school in the state files three primary applications. The TMDSAS guide covers its fee, essays, deadlines and the Texas match. If you're deciding whether the DO schools belong on your list, the MD vs DO comparison covers admissions and residency outcomes for both degrees.
